A suction dredger is a type of engineering vessel that utilizes pumps for dredging operations; the term is included in the first edition of *Terminology of Marine Science and Technology*, with corresponding English terms being "suction dredger" or "hydraulic dredger." These vessels use centrifugal slurry pumps to suction underwater silt; high-pressure water jets are employed to create a slurry, which is then transported via pipelines to a designated area. Common types include trailing suction hopper dredgers, cutter suction dredgers, and jet suction dredgers, with vessels categorized as either self-propelled or non-self-propelled based on their navigation capabilities. Due to their high operational value, suction dredgers are currently the most in-demand type of vessel in the dredging industry.
These vessels are powered by diesel engines, steam engines, or shore power and maintain their position during operations using spuds (positioning piles) or anchor-cable systems, offering the advantages of continuous dredging and high efficiency. In technical classification standards, self-propelled models are categorized by hopper capacity, while non-self-propelled models are classified by productivity. They are suitable for dredging waterways with soft soils such as sand and silt, achieving high efficiency when the dredging layer thickness is less than 0.7 meters; some models feature dual suction intakes, allowing the dredging width to extend beyond 20 meters. First utilized in a Mississippi River project in 1893, advanced models-following optimizations to nozzle configuration and suction intake structure-have achieved productivity rates of up to 2,500 cubic meters per hour. However, the discharge pipelines on suction dredgers are relatively short, which limits the selection of spoil disposal sites.
