Suction dredgers-including cutter suction dredgers, suction-head dredgers, and trailing suction hopper dredgers-are currently the most in-demand vessel type in the dredging industry due to their high added value. In the field of vessel design, modular design approaches (such as configuring dredging equipment into independent modules for cutter suction, side-trailing, or suction-head operations) have been adopted; this facilitates shorter design cycles and cost savings while influencing factors such as general arrangement, structural design, and economic efficiency. Interface technology is the key to implementing this modularity.
Currently, the domestic dredging market faces a supply-demand gap, and the massive demand for dredgers presents a new opportunity for China's shipbuilding industry.
The cutter suction dredger (CSD) is a primary vessel type in the dredging industry; the action of its rotating cutter head is a major trigger for sediment release and turbidity generation. Operational parameters (such as the cutting ratio) significantly influence turbidity levels and are critical to environmental management.
In dredging projects conducted in waters such as the Yangtze River, the selection of spoil disposal areas is constrained by vessel equipment (e.g., the length of the discharge pipeline on suction dredgers) and must also account for the actual evolution of shoals, making it unsuitable to deposit dredged material onto upper-section shoals.
